There can be many reasons for low energy and prolonged fatigue and a naturopath will often dig deep to reveal the underlying cause.  One of the most common reasons is that of adrenal fatigue.

Many people are unaware of the humble adrenal glands.  They sit atop the kidneys and produce a variety of hormones including adrenalin and cortisol; released constantly when our bodies are under physical, mental and emotional stress. In the early stages, the stress hormones will rise to help us respond to the immediate anxiety or stress.  Over time, as the stress continues, our bodies learn to efficiently cope with the stressor.  Just like a machine, when we are exposed to a heavier load than we are designed to tolerate, we will reach the point when we become susceptible to wear and tear.  This eventually leads to adrenal fatigue at which point it is difficult for the adrenals to produce enough cortisol to support energy levels.

Some of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue include:

  • Feeling unrefreshed on waking
  • Fatigue not relieved by sleep
  • Craving for salty foods
  • Craving for carbohydrates
  • Lowered immune function
  • Anxiety and/or depression
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Decreased tolerance to everyday situations
  • Glucose intolerance

What can you do if you think you may be suffering from adrenal fatigue?

Based on your symptom picture and a thorough health history, you may be recommended to undertake adrenal hormone testing that I offer in my clinic.  This is a saliva test that provides the most accurate and non-invasive method to evaluate the body’s stress hormone status.  The results direct me to where you are on the scale of adrenal fatigue so that a tailored treatment plan can be devised to restore your adrenal health.
